Gaussian Spectral Line Profiles of Astrophysical Masers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Calculations are performed to demonstrate the deviations from Gaussian that occur in the spectral line profiles of a linear maser as a result of the amplification process. Near-Gaussian profiles are presented for bright, interstellar 22 GHz water masers obtained from high resolution Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of W3 IRS 5. For the profiles to be so close to Gaussian, the calculations indicate that these masers must originate in quite hot gas with temperatures greater than 1200 K — a conclusion that is supportive of C-type shocks as the origin of these masers. In addition, the degree of saturation of these masers must be less than approximately one-third, from which it follows that the beaming angles are less than about 10−4 ster and the actual luminosities are modest. If spectral profiles that are as close to Gaussian as the profiles presented in this initial investigation are found to occur widely, they can be valuable diagnostics for the environments of astrophysical masers. Astrophysical water masers : Line profiles analysis
The changes in the spectral line profile of the 22 GHz H 2 O maser are calculated as a function of emerging maser flux. We address not only the narrowing and re-broadening of the maser lines, but also the deviations of Gaussian symmetry as a result of the various hyperfine components of the 22 GHz maser line. Non-LTE models of the H 2 O maser transition, including hyperfine structure and cross-...
متن کاملA Very High Spectral Resolution Study of Ground-state Oh Masers in W3(oh)
We present VLBA observations of the ground-state hydroxyl masers in W3(OH) at 0.02 km s−1 spectral resolution. Over 250 masers are detected, including 56 Zeeman pairs. Lineshapes are predominantly Gaussian or combinations of several Gaussians, with normalized deviations typically of the same magnitude as in masers in other species. Typical FWHM maser linewidths are 0.15 to 0.38 km s−1 and are l...
متن کاملThe Millennium Arecibo 21-cm Absorption Line Survey. I. Techniques and Gaussian Fits
We review the theory of measuring spectral lines in emission/absorption observations and apply it to a new survey of the 21-cm line against 79 continuum sources. We develop an observing technique and least-squares procedure to determine the opacity profile, the expected emission profile, and their uncertainty profiles. We discuss the radiative transfer for the two-component interstellar HI gas ...
متن کاملTheory and Extragalactic Masers
Theoretical research on extragalactic masers (and hence this review) is almost entirely directed toward 22 GHz water masers in circumnuclear disks with the focus being the near ideal masing disk at the nucleus of the galaxy NGC4258. The discussion here is organized around (1) the excitation and conditions for the masers, (2) the spatial and spectral appearance of the maser emission, and (3) the...
متن کاملInfrared OH absorption lines in 1612MHz OH maser sources
ISO mid-infrared absorption data helps to distinguish between radiative and collisional pumping mechanisms in 1612MHz OH masers in various environments. Archive data of OH absorption at 34.6 and 53.3 μm shows different behavior and different pumping rates for different types of maser sources. 1.
